Physical Education : The Eatwell Plate

Image
Hello everyone,  Students in Phyiscal Education have been studying diet and healthy eating, so I thought I would introduce them to the Eatwell Plate. This plate is a visual aid to help us understand how much from each food group we should have in our diet.  We used an interactive resource from Food Standards Scotland   to complete our own Eatwell Plate buy adding each item of food to the relevant section. Students then completed their own Eatwell Plate on the worksheet below:  They drew images of the food items we saw during the interactive activity and wrote down the names of fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, protein, fats and dairy products.  In the next class we completed a quiz about the Eatwell plate to test their understanding, how many answers do you know?  Check out the answers here ! History : The Real Story of Thanksgiving

Image
Hello everyone,  Today is Thanksgiving!  The first Thanksgiving holiday meal took place in 1621, when pilgrims and Native Americans famously shared a meal to give thanks to God for a sucessful harvest. It was declared a national holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.  In history class, we watched this video about the real story of thanks giving and tried to answer these questions:  1. Where did the story of Thanksgiving start?  2. When did the pilgrims arrive at the Hudson Valley? 3. What did the pilgrims do once they had decided to live there?  4. Were the pilgrims alone in this new place? 5. What important event changed the pilgrims behaviour? 6. Who was Squanto? 7. What traditional dish is cooked for Thanksgiving day? What did you know about Thanksgiving before you watched the video? Are you surprised by the origins of this national holiday? To find out how Americans celebrate Thanksgiving today, check out this video:  Alice

English : 'used to' + infinitive

Image
Hi everyone,  Yesterday in English class we revised and practiced the construction 'used to' + infintive and 'didn't used to' + infintive.  I gave a short presentation explaining the grammar rule and then we played a 'used to' board game from Teach This to allow students to practice what they had learnt.  Why not have a go at this game yourself?  Alice

Physical Education : bones and muscles

Image
Hello everyone,  In Phyical Education class, we have been studying English terms for bones and muscles. Students completed their own skeletons and muscle diagrams and labeled with them with the correct vocabulary.  We played a game in class which challenged students to learn the new terms in two minutes and then work as a team to complete the diagram as quickly and as accurately as they could. I was impressed by how fast they managed to learn and retain the technical spellings and pronunciations.  In the next class we used these Kahoot! exercises to check our understanding, of bones  and muscles  play the game and see how many you get right! Physics and Chemistry : changing states of matter

Image
In this class we learnt about changing states of matter and the important role temperature plays in this process.  We watched this video and answered the questions together:  What are the three physical states of matter?  What is the most common liquid covering planet Earth?  We cannot see gases, but what can we see?  How can the state of solids, liquids and gases be changed?  What are the characteristics of atoms in a solid (3 points)  What happens to the particles when we raise the temperature of a solid?  What is the change from a solid to a liquid called? What are the characteristics of a gas?  What is the change from a liquid to a gas called? What is the process of a liquid turning into a solid called?  Students then wrote a summary of this information and copied this diagram:

History : King Aurthur's Knights of the Round Table

Image
Hello everyone,  2 ESO A have been learning about Medieval Europe recently, so I thought it would be a fun activity to challenge them to design their own coat of arms. Each student was given a description of a different Knight of the Round Table, famous characters from the British  legend of King Arthur . Althought King Aurhur is a mythical figure, his Round Table really did exist! Check out this youtube video to find out more: The students task was to read a description of their knight and create a coat of arms which reflected their character, using symbols, line divisions and colours. Then they wrote a short biography.  The results were so great we made a display!

Get to know me : Alice's introductory presentation

Image
Hello everyone,  This was the introductory presentation that I gave to students during my first week at IES Juan Antonio Pérez Mercader.  I described where I am from, my family, my education, my hobbies, my favourite artists and tv shows. Then students were invited to ask me questions to find out more about me.

New assistant, new blog!

Image
Hello everyone,  I'm Alice, the English Language Assistant at IES Juan Antonio Pérez Mercader. I recently graduated from Lancaster University in the UK with a degree in French and Spanish Studies. I started working in Corrales in October and will be here in Huelva until May.  Now that I've settled into the school after about a month of getting to know students and staff, working with student in 2 ESO, I wanted to create a blog to share what I have been getting up to! This will be a platform to share resources across the school and to showcase students work across a variety of subjects.   I hope to update this blog weekly in English to keep students, staff and parents in the know as to what is happening in bilingual classes such as Physical Education, History and Geography and Physics and Chemistry.
